Coroner finally reveals Sinead O’Connor’s cause of death

The cause of Sinead O'Connor's unexpected death in July 2023 has been officially disclosed by a coroner, initiating a global response of grief for the renowned Irish music icon known as the "Daughter of Ireland".

According to British authorities, the 56-year-old singer died of natural causes, a revelation that has led to an extensive outpouring of condolences and remembrance from her admirers worldwide.

Discovered unresponsive in her London home last July, the sudden passing of O'Connor prompted an emotional worldwide reaction. John Thompson, a clerk of Southwark Coroners Court in London, confirmed the natural cause of death, leading to the cessation of the coroner's involvement in the case.

A prior statement on the Coroner's website had indicated that a decision regarding the need for an inquest would be made once the cause of death was determined. O'Connor was pronounced dead at the scene in her Herne Hill penthouse in South London, with no immediate disclosure of the medical cause of death. The Coroner opted not to provide additional details regarding the specific circumstances of her passing following the autopsy.

In the period leading up to her death, O'Connor had taken to social media to share personal updates, expressing a newfound sense of happiness after moving back to London. This phase marked a fresh start for the singer following the tragic loss of her son Shane, who, at the age of 17, took his own life in January 2022 after escaping hospital while under suicide watch.

A year later, in January, O'Connor was admitted to the hospital after revealing on social media that she had decided to follow her son's path. The singer had been open about her mental health struggles, using platforms like Twitter to convey the depth of her grief, referring to herself as an "undead night creature" since the loss of her beloved son, whom she described as "the love of my life, the lamp of my soul".

A funeral procession for O'Connor through her hometown in Bray, Ireland, witnessed a gathering of thousands of mourners. Draped in blue, white and pink flowers, her coffin rolled through the streets after a private memorial service attended by family, friends and fellow musicians such as Bono and Bob Geldof, the latter observed riding behind the cortege.

Geldof, reflecting on O'Connor's tumultuous life, spoke of the "terrible loneliness and terrible despair" that had haunted her many times. The procession, passing along the seafront south of Dublin, where O'Connor had lived for 15 years, marked the final chapter in the life of a music legend whose legacy will forever be intertwined with the pain and beauty she brought to the world.

Image: Instagram

Lisa Curry's emotional post sparks a wave of support and love

Lisa Curry has shared a heartfelt tribute on the third anniversary of her daughter Jaimi's death.

Jaimi passed away in 2020 after a long health battle, at just 33 years old, and is the daughter of Lisa and former Ironman Grant Kenny.

Lisa took to Instagram to commemorate her daughter with a painting of Jaimi that she commissioned to a local artist, and share her grief journey.

"3 years ago, our beautiful daughter Jaimi took her last breath. We all love you and miss you everyday Jaimi and hope you’re at peace. It still feels like yesterday," she began the long and emotional post.

“We all love you and miss you every day Jaimi and hope you’re at peace.

“It’s been a s*** and sad week, where I’ve needed lots of hugs and am constantly wiping my tears away. I tell myself to breathe because I know it’s a bad day, not a bad life.

“I’m doing ok ... but feeling sad on the inside while trying to be happy on the outside is overwhelming and feels exhausting," she added.

Lisa also said that sometimes she can barely recognise herself in the mirror because she looks like "a mess" and other times she sees "the old Lisa."

"The path to recovery is long and can only be done in my own time.

"The last 3 years has been a long, slow, painful, uneventful decline in my health and my soul. I talk out loud, frustratingly scolding myself to get my s*** together. There are days when I don’t care about anything.

"I need to change that talk to be more positive and give myself permission that it’s ok to move forward.

"Moving on doesn’t mean letting go. I will never let her go," she added.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lisa Curry AO (@lisacurry)

Lisa then said that she needed to start looking after herself so she can be "the mother, grannie, wife and friend that I should be."

She then thanked local artist Donna Munro for the beautiful painting of her daughter, before asking her fans if they were okay, after noting that it was R U OK Day.

She reminded fans to talk to someone and sent “Love and strength to everyone who’s struggling for whatever reason.”

Her followers flocked to the comments to offer their love and support, and thanked her for being open and vulnerable.

“Do what you can today Lisa and let tomorrow take care of the rest. Hugs to you," commented a fourth.

"I hope that you find a little comfort in the fact that you would have helped so many other people going through similar grief. Sending much needed hugs and sunshine," added another.

Images: Instagram

Sinead O'Connor was once seen as a sacrilegious rebel, but her music and life were deeply infused with spiritual seeking

Brenna Moore, Fordham University

When news broke July 26, 2023, that the gifted Irish singer Sinead O’Connor had died, stories of her most famous performance circulated amid the grief and shock.

Thirty-one years ago, after a haunting rendition of Bob Marley’s song “War,” O’Connor ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on live television. “Fight the real enemy,” she said – a reference to clerical sex abuse. For months afterward, she was banned, booed and mocked, dismissed as a crazy rebel beyond the pale.

Commemorations following her death, however, cast the protest in a very different light. Her “Saturday Night Live” performance is now seen as “invigorating,” the New York Times’ pop critic wrote, and “a call to arms for the dispossessed.”

Attitudes toward Catholicism, sex and power are far different today than in 1992, whether in New York or O’Connor’s native Dublin. In many people’s eyes, the moral credibility of the Catholic Church around the world has crumbled, and trust in faith institutions of any sort is at an all-time low. Sexual abuse, once discussed only in whispers, is now beginning to be talked about openly.

I join the chorus of voices today who say O’Connor was decades ahead of her time. But leaving it just at that, we miss something profound about the complexity and depth of her religious imagination. Sinead O’Connor was arguably one of the most spiritually sensitive artists of our time.

I am a scholar of Catholicism in the modern era and have long been interested in those figures – the poets, artists, seekers – who wander the margins of their religious tradition. These men and women are dissatisfied with the mainstream centers of religious power but nonetheless compelled by something indelibly religious that feeds the wellsprings of their artistic imagination.

Throughout her life, O’Connor defied religious labels, exploring multiple faiths. The exquisite freedom in her music cannot be disentangled from that something transcendent that she was always after.

‘Rescuing God from religion’

Religion is often thought about as discreet traditions: institutions that someone is either inside or outside. But on the ground, it is rarely that simple.

The Catholic Church had a strong hold on Irish society as O’Connor was growing up – a “theocracy,” she called it in interviews and her memoir, “Rememberings” – and for many years she called for more accountability for the clerical abuse crisis. But she was also open in her love of other aspects of the faith, albeit often in unorthodox ways. She had a tattoo of Jesus on her chest and continued to critique the church while appearing on television with a priest’s collar.

Ten years after her SNL performance, O'Connor took courses at a seminary in Dublin with a Catholic Dominican priest, Rev. Wilfred Harrington. Together, they read the prophets of the Hebrew Bible and the Psalms: sacred scriptures in which God’s voice comes through in darker, moodier, more human forms.

Inspired by her teacher, she made the gorgeous album “Theology,” dedicated to him. The album is a mix of some of her own songs inspired by the Hebrew Bible – like “If You Had a Vineyard,” inspired by the Book of Isaiah; and “Watcher of Men,” which draws from the biblical story of Job – and other tracks that essentially are sung versions of her favorite Psalms.

In a 2007 interview with Fordham University’s WFUV radio station, O'Connor said that she was hoping the album could show God to people when religion itself had blocked their access to God. It was a kind of “rescuing God from religion,” to “lift God out of religion.” Rather than preaching or writing, “music is the little way that I do that,” she said, adding, “I say that as someone who has a lot of love for religion.”

Reading the prophets

In doing so, she stood in the long line of the prophetic tradition itself.

The great Jewish thinker Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s book “The Prophets” begins with this sentence: “This book is about some of the most disturbing people who have ever lived.” Over and over, the Bible shows the prophets – the prophets who inspired “Theology” – mounting bracing assaults on hypocrisies and insincerities in their own religious communities, and not politely or calmly.

To many horrified Catholics, O’Connor’s SNL appearance and her many other criticisms of the church were blasphemous – or, at best, just throwing stones from outside the church for attention. Other fans, however, saw it as prophetic condemnation. It was not just a critique of child abuse but of church officials’ professed compassion for children – sanctimonious pieties as they covered up the abuse.

In calling this out and so much more, O’Connor was often seen as disturbing: not just the photo-of-the-pope incident, but her androgyny, her shaved head, her openness around her own struggles with mental illness. But for many admirers, as the documentary “Nothing Compares” makes clear, all this showed that she was free, and like the prophets of old, unashamed and unafraid to provoke.

Rasta to Islam

At the same time, O’Connor’s religious imagination was so much more than a complex relationship with Catholicism. Religion around O’Connor was eclectic and intense.

She was deeply influenced by Rastafarian traditions of Jamaica, which she described as “an anti-religious but massively pro-God spiritual movement.” She considered Sam Cooke’s early album with the Soul Stirrers the best gospel album ever made. She counted among her spiritual heroes Muhammad Ali – and converted to Islam in 2018, changing her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat.

Yet O’Connor’s vision was not fragmented, as if she were constantly chasing after bits and pieces. The miracle of Sinead O’Connor is that it all coheres, somehow, in the words of an artist who refuses to lie, to hide or not say what she thinks.

When asked about spirituality, O’Connor once said that she preferred to sing about it, not talk about it – as she does in so many songs, from her luminous singing of the antiphon, a Marian hymn sung at Easter services, to her Rasta-inspired album, “Throw Down Your Arms.”

In “Something Beautiful,” a track from the “Theology” album, O’Connor speaks both to God and the listener: “I wanna make/ Something beautiful/ For you and from you/ To show you/ I adore you.”

Indeed she did. To be moved by her art is to sense a transcendence, a peek into radiance.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "Insultingly stupid": Rock legend slams tributes to Sinead O'Connor

Morrissey has taken aim at some "disingenuous" people who have paid tribute to Sinead O'Connor in the hours after her death.

The Irish singer was tragically passed away at the age of 56 on Thursday, after a statement from her family confirmed the devastating news.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time," the singer's family said in a statement, prompting a wave of homages online from her fans.

However, the former frontman of The Smiths has shared a furious note on his website, criticising some of the tributes which he described as "sterile slop".

He wrote that he believes people are only praising her work and activism now that she has passed, and the gushing tributes have largely come from people who criticised her career while she was alive.

He wrote, “She was dropped by her label after selling 7 million albums for them.”

“She had proud vulnerability … and there is a certain music industry hatred for singers who don’t ‘fit in’ (this I know only too well), and they are never praised until death – when, finally, they can’t answer back. The cruel playpen of fame gushes with praise for Sinead today … with the usual moronic labels of 'icon' and 'legend'."

“You praise her now ONLY because it is too late. You hadn’t the guts to support her when she was alive and she was looking for you.”

He also blasted others in the wider industry for not giving O’Connor props while she was alive.

“The press will label artists as pests because of what they withhold … and they would call Sinead sad, fat, shocking, insane … oh but not today! Music CEOs who had put on their most charming smile as they refused her for their roster are queuing-up to call her a ‘feminist icon’, and 15 minute celebrities and goblins from hell and record labels of artificially aroused diversity are squeezing onto Twitter to twitter their jibber-jabber … when it was YOU who talked Sinead into giving up … because she refused to be labelled, and she was degraded, as those few who move the world are always degraded.”

He went on to compare O’Connor to other entertainers who died at a young age, such as Judy Garland, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse, asking “why is ANYBODY surprised” that they died.

“Where do you go when death can be the best outcome?” he asked.

He finished with an instruction to those who had offered the “insultingly stupid” and "disingenuous" tributes that O’Connor was an “icon” and a “legend”, saying “Sinead doesn’t need your sterile slop.”

Morrissey's rant was met with a mixed response from fans, while other celebrities shared their support of his sentiment.

Boy George tweeted his agreeance, shared a photo of himself with Sinead and writing, “Morrissey is both wrong and right. Most people had zero influence over Sinead. She was her own person with her own issues. At time like this you can only offer prayers because we are out of solutions. My mum and I had great chats about Sinead. We all wanted her fixed.”

Aussie actress in catastrophic bus crash offered $16 voucher as compensation

An Aussie tourist left injured and stranded after a fatal bus crash in southern Italy has claimed the travel company only offered her a meal voucher for the inconvenience.

Australian actress Sinead Curry, who has starred in TV shows like The Haunting of Nancy Drew and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, said that nine hours following the crash, the European bus company offered her a $16 meal voucher for her troubles.

Curry and partner Salma Salah, both from Sydney, boarded the FlixBus in the city of Bari on June 3 for the long journey to the Northern city of Bologna with a transfer to Rome.

However, two hours into the trip Curry said the “bus hit something”.

“We were all asleep, it went airborne and spun around a bunch of times,” she said in a TikTok video posted the following day, showing her in hospital wearing a neck brace.

Curry told followers the bus was “flung around like in a blender” before it landed down by an embankment, which she claimed was “on the other side of the road”.

“Several cars then hit the bus moving the bus closer and closer to the side of the road,” Curry explained in her video.

Italian and German media reported the bus crash occurred near the town of Avellino, approximately 50km east of the southwest city of Naples.

Five cars were caught up in the accident and local emergency services were quoted as saying the “lifeless body of a man was found” along with 14 people sustaining injuries.

Curry said there were 38 people on the bus, including another Aussie woman called “Caity”, who suffered a broken collarbone.

After Curry was discharged from the hospital, fearing her nose was broken but was assured it was not, she made another video emphasising how she felt abandoned by the bus company.

“FlixBus none of your numbers are working,” an emotional Curry urged.

“They ring out and they hang up on us. We cannot get any information from FlixBus, we cannot get our luggage back.

“They offered us by text a 10 euro ($16) meal replacement voucher for the inconvenience.

“There are a bunch of people here who nearly died we don't have any information.”

Curry later claimed FlixBus even blocked her on social media.

“We just want some information and some help,” she explained, complaining that she was still waiting on her luggage to be returned.

FlixBus issued a statement claiming “a support line and email” was provided to all passengers and their families following the incident.

"Outbound calls were made to passengers who had registered their mobile numbers, and emails were sent to passengers with instructions,” the bus company said.

“At all times, the safety of its passengers and drivers is of highest priority to FlixBus.”

Two days following the incident Curry received her luggage and was in Rome after an emergency shuttle had been deployed for stranded passengers.

However, she said that as they arrived in Rome, passengers were finding “shrapnel” from the crash in their bodies and she had gotten a piece out of herself.

On June 5 Curry took to TikTok again, saying she and her partner were grateful to be “safe and in Rome”.

Although safe, she did note that they were heading to the hospital to get checked again as she was suffering from “very severe headaches” and had intense pain in her jaw.

Curry then thanked the “heroes” in Italian fire and rescue, who she said took her and her partner in and gave them pasta, crackers, water and a change of clothes.

She said FlixBus had rung her twice at a later date to tell the couple to keep receipts for a full refund.

Curry jetted to Europe for her dream holiday but given the incident, she and her partner are dumping their Italian plans to recuperate in Rome.

“We are so grateful to be alive please hold your loved ones close,” she said.

Sweet reason why Kochie wore lipstick live on air

David Koch wore bright red lipstick in an interview on Sunrise on Monday morning- all for a good cause.

The Sunrise host wore the bold colour while interviewing model Jett Kenny, the son of sporting greats Grant Kenny and Lisa Curry.

Jett also put on red lipstick mid-interview as part of the Lip-Stick It campaign - an initiative that encourages Aussie men to wear lipstick on May 11 to raise awareness and help raise funds for women’s mental health support services.

“Less than half of the women experiencing mental health are seeking help,” Jett said on Sunrise.

The initiative comes after the tragic death of Jett’s sister Jaimi, who had passed away three years ago from mental health issues.

Ever since then Jett had vowed to raise awareness and funding for the cause, and is now the inaugural ambassador for the Lip-Stick It campaign.

“Encouraging those people to just talk about it and having the strength that they might need to voice what they are going through. I think that was the biggest thing I found was they were so reserved, or she [Jaimi] was so reserved talking about her issues and her struggles”, Jett said.

He added that, although not everyone with mental health issues experiences the same thing, he wants to encourage women to “just speak about it”.

Kochie then told Jeff to “whack on the lippie”, as they talked about the campaign further.

“I was trying to [apply lipstick] the other day and it is quite difficult. I might look like the Joker while I do this,” Jett told Kochie.

“A lot of people think I look like the Joker without the lipstick,” Kochie quipped.

Jokes aside, Jett then told the Sunrise host how proud he was to launch the campaign and support the women in their lives.

“It’s our chance for us men to get behind the women that we love and support and show that we care,” Jett said.

“If all it takes is to put on some red lipstick to start a conversation, and talk about it, I feel like it’s the least we can do.

“It’s a big thing, not only for myself but for a lot of people. It could be happening to a person you work with, someone you know, but they you know – might not be talking about it because they don’t feel comfortable to do so,” he added.

Jaimi died on September 14, 2020, following an 18-year battle with alcohol addiction and an eating disorder.

She died at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and was surrounded by her family at the time of her death.

In late January, Lisa Curry posted an emotional tribute to her eldest daughter in honour of her memory.

Images: Sunrise on 7

Lisa Curry’s devastating health condition

Australian Olympian Lisa Curry has revealed she has been diagnosed with a heart condition.

The 60-year-old shared her devastating diagnosis known as Atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that causes irregular and abnormal heart rates.

Speaking on Sunrise, Curry said she has been to the doctors who ordered her to change some of her daily habits.

“I have been in hospital twice this year with a little bit of AF," the swimming legend said of her Atrial fibrillation.

"I don’t know where I have got that – it has just appeared. The doctors say I need to be weaned off alcohol and coffee, and that is hard.

“It’s when your heart’s racing for now reason. I’m now on beta blockers, which make you tired, so there is a lot going on.”

She said that she’s “trying to do that” but is struggling and has started taking Beta blockers which treat the high blood pressure.

A year before her diagnosis, the author was hospitalised with chest pains which she claimed was “heartache” following her daughter Jaimi’s death at the age of 33 in 2020.

“It’s day 5 after coming in with chest pain, a wide squeezing band around my chest and back. All my tests are good. Everyone is stumped,” she wrote on Instagram in July 2021.

“But you can’t test for heartache.

“For every beautiful photo of our girl , there are 10 sad ones. As I lie here thinking about our Jaimi, I wanted to show you how much she hurt too. Broken hearted by things that people said to her and did to her.

“Words and actions hurt people so deep that they store that trauma for such a long time. Some people can get through it.. some live with it, some just can’t.

“There are many people, like Jaimi, who are beautiful, soft, fragile, sensitive, and are taken advantage of, their trust misused and abused. There are some really questionable people who take advantage of others who are fragile, who go on to live their lives not having a clue the damage they’ve left.

“In the (written) stages of grief, there is shock and denial, pain and guilt, anger and bargaining, depression, the upward turn, reconstruction and working through, and acceptance and hope.

“You don’t go through each one and tick it off - they overlap, they come and go constantly.

“It’s hard, but you do start to work through them. I’ve found that writing things down is helping. People reaching out to me, although hard, is also helping… because we’re not alone.

“You never know what will trigger the heart ache, or the tears… it could be a word, a thought, a song, a photo, a memory, a hug from a stranger…all we need is a hug… and understanding… nothing even needs to be said.

“I now know that every second person you see is grieving in some way so always be kind to others.

“To those grieving, I hope you are ok and that you also can find beauty and love in the sadness.

“Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. If you feel ANY sort of chest pain, call 000.”

Image: Sunrise

Lisa Curry shares daughter Jaimi's dying wish

Lisa Curry has shared the dying wish of her daughter Jaimi that was unable to be fulfilled before her death.

In an emotional interview with Women's Weekly, the former Olympian remembered the life and dreams of her beloved daughter.

"Jaimi wanted to write a book to help others, but it was too late. We left it too late," the 60-year-old told the magazine.

"But I hope that, by being honest and knowing that Jaimi wanted to help others, we can help in some way, in some small way."

The revelation comes almost two years after Jaimi's death, as she passed away in 2020 at age 33 from an undisclosed health battle.

In Lisa's recently published memoir, Lisa: A Memoir - 60 Years of Life, Love & Loss, she revealed that Jaimi had been fighting a lot of personal demons before her untimely death.

While staying by her daughter's side until the very end, Lisa admitted that it was "exhausting" worrying about Jaimi, as she also had to care for her two other children: daughter Morgan, 31, and son Jett, 28, who she shares with ex-husband Grant Kenny.

"You can't live your life for one child. You have three children and they are all the world to you, and that's why I have to be really conscious of my self-care, so that I can be there for them and the grandchildren," Curry explained.

"But bloody hell it's hard. Morgan and Jett are really understanding."

In a previous interview with Today, Lisa said she will continue to tell both the good and bad sides of Jaimi's story to help others who may also be battling similar demons.

"Some people are struggling every single day. Their body, their mind, is screaming, but no-one is hearing. Then there is people like Jaimi who just can't get through," she said.

Despite the overwhelming grief, Lisa said she gets by knowing Jaimi's spirit is still around.

"She's never far away, you know. She's always around, somehow."

"We'd known for years": Lisa Curry finally reveals the real tragedy behind her daughter's death

Lisa Curry has finally opened up fully on the events of that tragic night when she and former partner Grant Kenny lost their eldest daughter Jaimi after a long health battle.

In a candid and revealing extract from her new biography Lisa: 60 Years of Life, Love and Loss, Curry details exactly what happened that evening.

She said on the night in September 2020, Jaimi had called her saying she was vomiting blood.

An ambulance was called and Lisa, along with her husband, Mark Tabone, rushed to Jaimi’s side. When they arrived, they were told Jaimi was in a stable condition and under sedation. But just 40 minutes later they were called back and told she was now on ventilation and her condition had become critical.

“I ran to her and called softly, “Jaimi, Jaimi, it’s Mum. Open your eyes, baby, open your eyes. Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.” But there was no response, there was just nothing. I was numb,” writes Lisa in her memoir.

She said Jaimi’s kidneys were shutting down as the doctor gave her the devastating news.

“Jaimi will die tonight,” he told Lisa.

“Hearing those words, I was sobbing. “No, no, no, I’m not ready!” Even though we’d known for years this time would come, we didn’t want it to be real,” she writes.

Jaimi died later that night, surrounded by her family.

Then on Tuesday in a heartbreaking interview on Sunrise, Curry spoke openly to Natalie Barr and Michael Usher in more detail about the effects of the tragic loss – as well as some of the incredible positives to have emerged.

It has now emerged that Jaimi had battled an eating disorder and alcohol addiction for many years prior to her death at age 33 in 2020.

“Writing the book was really hard because I started it at a time when I didn’t even want to get out of bed,” Lisa told the Sunrise hosts.

“For the past 19 years now, even though we look like we’re having fun and we’re doing great things, in the background it was terribly hard every single day.”

In an emotional admission, Lisa said that Jaimi had hoped to tell her story in a book of her own “to help others in her position”, but sadly she did not get the chance.

“We had lined up a friend of mine who is a journalist to sit with Jaimi to write the book, but we left it too late,” the mother of three said.

“We always thought we had time, but we didn’t.

“In my small way I hope that I’m helping people and even, you know, I haven’t been able to talk about it, but I can write about it,” Lisa said through tears.

“I had a message from a lady on social media and she said she that she spoke to her daughter about what happened to Jaimi and her daughter is now on the road to recovery,” she said.

“She said ‘it won’t mend your heart or bring Jaimi back, but it’s helped save another child’.”

Lisa said revealed that being open and honest about her daughter’s death seemed the best course “so there’s no stigma about it and people can feel OK about talking about their feelings and their mental health and not coping”.

“Hopefully we can start to find the red flags a lot earlier,” she concluded.

Image: Instagram

Lisa Curry opens up on Steve Irwin losing Australian of the Year award

Former Olympian Lisa Curry’s new memoir has revealed how crocodile hunter Steve Irwin lost the title of Australian of the Year over a controversial photo, with the Aussie swimmer expressing her regret over a “shemozzle that should never have happened”.

Curry was chair of the National Australia Day council in 2004, when the decision to bestow the title on Irwin was overturned at the last minute and cricket star Steve Waugh received it instead.

The switch came amid outcry over a photograph of Irwin holding his then-baby Robert while feeding a crocodile at the family-run Australia Zoo in early 2004.

Despite telling Irwin he would be the recipient of the award, the council made the call in the belief that he could nominate again in a few years’ time - with no-one imagining Irwin would be fatally stung just two years later.

Speaking to News Corp papers, Curry said she would have made a different decision if faced with it today, and that she would award Irwin the award posthumously if that were possible.

“It was such a shemozzle that should never have happened,” she said.

“Today, I would have just said, ‘No, we are going ahead with it’.

“Sometimes you do things to please people, to please the media or the public, and these days I’d go, ‘No. This is what we are doing. "We'll all miss you": Lisa Curry shares heartbreaking news

Former Olympian Lisa Curry has shared heartbreaking news that her beloved mum had passed away aged 86.

The 59-year-old took to Instagram on Thursday night to share the sad update about Pat, two weeks after they were finally able to reunite.

“My heart is broken again. Our beautiful mum slipped away peacefully this morning,” Curry wrote in her heartfelt tribute, along with sharing a photo of her mum with a red rose and a teddy bear.

“My brother Scott travelled for 48 hrs from Berlin, my sister Melanie and I continually counting down the days, hours and minutes to mum until he arrived. She waited. We shared some last laughs, memories and lots of tears.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lisa Curry AO (@lisacurry)

The loss comes less than two years after Curry lost her daughter Jaimi, who died battling an eating disorder in 2020.

“Ma to Jaimi, Morgan, Jett and Bodhi; Mama to Flynn and Taj,” her tribute continued.

“My baby girl, and now my mum … 86 years, nearly 87 …

“I took this photo just yesterday … so beautiful and peaceful, I love this photo.

“Thank you for being a wonderful mother. Have a nice long sleep mum. We love you so much and we’ll all miss you.”

Curry previously shared a clip of herself in full PPE in mid-February, when she was able to visit her mum in her aged care facility after it was locked down for a month.

“Shout out to all the nurses and doctors, or anyone who has to wear this stuff every single day - I don’t know how you can do it, I can’t breathe!” she said in the video.

“Good on you. Thanks for looking after our elderly parents. Thanks.”

Her tribute to her mum was quickly flooded with supportive and kind messages from her followers and friends, including her I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! co-stars Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Tegan Martin.

“Sending you so much love beautiful. 💗,” Bassingthwaighte wrote.

“So sorry 😢 sending you lots of love jungle ma. 💗💗,” Martin commented.

“What a beautiful picture of your mum. She looks peaceful and content. I’m so sorry for all the sadness you have had to endure. Love to you and all your family xx 💗💗,” another follower shared.

“Sorry to see you’ve lost your mum Lisa. I lost mine 12 years ago,” a second person wrote.

“It’s so hard… there’s truly no one like your mum.
